THIS MONTH'S TOPIC - WRITING MEDIA RELEASES

Follow the format: who, what, where, when, why

If further detail is needed use the extended format: who, what, where, when, why, how, what was the outcome

Summarise the key points in the first paragraph

Make the release as short as possible - the editor can come back to you for more information if necessary

Use a descriptive, rather than catchy, headline - editors like to write their own

Make sentences short and punchy

Use active verbs where possible, for example, Mr. Smith hit Mr. Brown, rather than Mr. Brown was hit by Mr. Smith

Check whether the medium accepts electronic releases

Use reasonable A4 paper - it has to withstand handling

Use double line spacing for printed media and triple for broadcast; both with wide margins
